Course Selection Overview
The GBHS master schedule is built in the spring for the following year based on student needs and course requests. The schedule is constructed so that students are enrolled in courses they must have, and every effort is made to schedule the electives they would like to have. The schedule also takes into account the staff and facility parameters that affect the schedule. We might not be able to offer everything in the catalog in the following school year, as courses are based on student interest.
Our staff encourages students and parents to make thoughtful and informed decisions during the course selection process. Course changes are limited.
Requesting Changes
Students should select courses carefully, as schedule changes are very limited once the master schedule is finalized. Multiple opportunities are provided before the school year begins to review and adjust course requests:
- Registration Advising (beginning of spring term): One-on-one student/counselor meetings to confirm course selections
- Course Review (end of spring term): Students review for scheduling errors and may request a course request, if necessary
- Spring Term Change Window (end of fall term): Limited opportunity for spring schedule changes
Scheduling Errors
The Counseling Department will promptly address the following scheduling errors:
-
Missing graduation-required course(s)
-
Blank/missing class period
-
Enrollment in a course without meeting prerequisites
-
Duplicate courses in the same period
- Course level changes based on teacher recommendation
Note: Students must remain in assigned classes until officially notified of a change. Teachers will alert the Counseling Department if a student is inappropriately placed.
Drop F Policy
There are limited options available when students inquire about leaving a class outside the established course change window. Because of this, GBHS administration requires that students and parents/guardians follow these steps before deciding to create a “drop F” on the student's transcript.
- Plan your schedule accordingly by meeting the prerequisites in each course chosen.
- Understand course rigor and challenges inherent in your schedule; avoid overload.
If after all efforts to resolve the issue, a student chooses to drop a course after the first 10-days, they must enroll in another course (options may be limited), and the “Drop F” grade will be noted on the transcript. Teacher, counselor, and GBHS administration approval is required after attempts to resolve class issues with the teacher directly.
